Horizons Review

I believe it is very plausible for a group like the one in Horizons, to arise as extreme protectors of the Earth that could result in violent measures. For the future I think that the increase in eco-terrorism is definitely going to be an issue.  Considering the concern with the Earth and global warming is becoming an increasing topic all over the world. Environmental Degradation will need to be addressed. It is already having its affects and has already called for international cooperation. November 2015, the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held to talk about global concerns. Also, the Earth Liberation Front (ELF),Greenpeace, and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society have already been accused of eco-terrorists acts. Additionally, since past movements of development and industrialization are definitely taking their toll on the environment and will continue to be exacerbated, radical environmentalist movements are not a question of if, but when will they expand and how large will they be.

Additionally, an implausible aspect of the future is the decrease in communication. I do not believe communication will decrease, I believe it will continue to grow. The advancements of technology will make it harder to monitor and aspects of social media are the rise. Especially in democratic countries, forms of free thinking and communication will not decrease so easily. Interconnectedness and communication are important parts of society and culture. Therefore the idea that communication will be harder is a very implausible thought.

  1. I don't think communication difficulties are all that implausible when we start talking about space communication. There is no precedent for cheap communication methods in space and there is no reason to believe we will find one. I don't even know if a SIM cardd would work in space. Though technology is improving exponentially, so you may be right. I'm just not so certain.

    1. Noah I do see your point on the idea of space communication. I believe it is plausible in the aspect of the rapid advancements in technology just as you mentioned. Also, if you think about it we do have a channel for satellite communication and the growth of that could provide a reasonable explanation for communication methods in space.

  2. Though Noah is definitely right about there being no precedent for good and cheap communication in space, even on earth Ahni had a hard time communicating with people on earth like Li Zheng. Much of the problems came from not being able to speak to each other in real time. I'm definitely in agreement with Riannon when it comes to the rise of eco-terrorism. Sometimes, terrorist groups cause a huge event in order to call attention to a problem that is largely being ignored. Actually, this is the idea behind many organizations. With the huge debate on whether or not global warming is man made or even exists at all, it is very possible for extremists to come forth.

    1. Grace my point on communication is currently on Earth communication between others is expanding and do not see a decrease in that whether it be on Earth or off. If we are as advanced in the future as this book describes I believe the creators of technology will find a way to communicate. Yes the rise of "eco terrorism" and "terrorism" in general are a popular topic right now. Our future and climate is so ever deteriorating, and I believe it plausible for extremists to display similar brash tactics for their cause.

  4. Riannon I have to agree with you when you say communication difficulties are one the more implausible points of the book. Communication is getting to the point where people all over the world cannot only speak to one another regardless of location but they can see one another as well through video chats and there is no reason to believe that this will stop being true. Technology is going to continue to improve and communication tools will continue to as well making communication even easier in the future even if it's communicating to space.

    1. Michael all of your points reiterate my beliefs on plausibility for communication in the future. The connectedness of our generation is unbelievable on a large scale. Between social media accounts and the news I also do not see communication diminishing.

  5. I could not agree more about the implausibility of such futile communications means in this book. The plot twists and issues in Ahni's life which emerge from the lack of workable communication devices is a bit ridiculous considering how effective our means are today. The trend which we have observed over the past several decades suggests that communication should become easier with time, not obsolete.
